Skills Necessary for Taking Pictures at Sunset
Some of the most dramatic landscape photographs are taken at start or end of the day. The magical time of sunrise and sunset when nature’s palette of colors expands to utilize oranges, reds and yellows.
What is sunset photography?
This is to stay stable and steady with your camera. This is key when shooting at slower speeds. And sunset photography typically requires slower shutter speeds, as lower light and smaller apertures. A remote shutter release would also be a smart idea.
When should I take sunset pictures?
Showing up early is always a good decision when shooting sunsets, but it’s important here — arriving 45 minutes before sunset will let you take full advantage of the golden hour and catch those rich, sunny tones bouncing off the waves.
But capturing that moment on film or in a digital photograph involves some major challenges.

Before the shot
Clean Your Lens
Dust, gravel, sand, water spots. When we take our picture gear in the elements, it gets dirty. Nothing seems to attract dust like a lens’ front part. Only look at it after a while you’ve been out shooting. Point that the resulting images accentuate dirty lens toward the sun and even the tiniest dust specks. This is more than I want to admit, so learn from my mistakes. Sure, the dust spots can be cloned out in post-processing, but a quick cleaning before shooting can save a lot of time later before the computer.
Although not generally a camera setting, it’s an important first move, particularly when shooting sunsets. Carrying a number of items in your camera bag can help keep things clean on time. Cleaning with microfiber fiber cleaning cloths, lens wipes, or a lens pen.
Use a Tripod
You can get many times without using a sunset photography tripod. There are, however, some legitimate reasons to get used to one. Tripods seem to slow down, and that’s not necessarily bad. When using a tripod, first focus is placed on creating good composition. Once completed, you can transfer your attention to the right exposure. That can aid when shooting in a sunset scene’s challenging lighting conditions. Of course, it’s crucial not to let the tripod grow ‘roots.’ Following the shot, turn about. Try another angle. Aim to the ground with the camera. You’ll get more exclusive shots instead of 50 photos that look exactly the same.
Shoot Wide then zoom in
For sunset photography and overall, big, sweeping views are usually what you want to catch. A focal length range of 14 mm to around 24 mm is a good starting point for composing the image and having all in your ideal frame. More spectacular sunset pictures can also be accentuated by shooting at a wider angle. More to come on that.
Try swapping lenses and zooming in after that wide-angle shot. Try various focal lengths and partially separate different parts of the scene with the light. Try making a tree silhouette or other object against the light. The only weakness is your imagination. There’s no rule about the right focal length, so do what you want, and have fun with it.
Setting
The colors of the sunset provide the backdrop. It is what is in the foreground that makes the picture. Keep in mind the objects in the foreground will end up as a silhouette in front of the sunset. Keep the objects simple and identifiable. People make excellent subjects in sunset pictures but individuals will largely be unidentifiable. It isn’t the place to try to make a portrait for a friend.
What is the best setting for sunset photography?
Here are the best camera settings for sunsets
- Exposure mode: Manual.
- Focus mode: Manual.
- Shutter speed: 1/30sec or longer.
- Aperture: f/16.
- ISO: 100 or lower.
- Lens: 18-24mm.
- Drive mode: Single-shot.
- White balance: Daylight.
Aperture
Set the aperture number high (between f/11 and f/16) for optimum field depth and keep the scene as centered as possible. Shooting at a high f-stop can also produce a cool sunset picture effect.
ISO
Keep your ISO lowest possible to prevent graininess. But note that you may have to crank the ISO higher as the sun goes down and the scene becomes dimmer to keep your f-stop number up.
RAW vs. JPEG
The amount of detail in sunset images makes this a perfect opportunity to film RAW.
Shutter Speed
The third leg of the exposure triangle, shutter speed, is all left with the aperture and ISO package. When shooting in Aperture Priority mode, the camera automatically sets the shutter speed. You also need to keep an eye on shutter speed to make sure the situation doesn’t get too slow. You can need to raise shutter speed to avoid foreground subject movement blur or camera shake if the camera is held by hand.
To increase shutter speed in this case, one or both parts of the exposure triangle must be changed. Since the aperture gives you the depth-of-field you want, leave it alone. Increasing ISO makes shutter speed faster. For instance, if shutter speed is 1/15th of a second, raising the ISO from 100 to 200 would make shutter speed 1/30th of a second. Doubling the ISO back to 400 would allow shutter speed 1/60th of a second (assuming the scene light doesn’t change). It’s a good idea to zoom in and review the images on the LCD screen of your camera to make sure you’re sharp.
Focus
Some cameras fail to focus in intense lighting conditions; if you notice this is the case, you might want to try switching to manual focus.
Contrast
By definition sunset photographs are going to be high contrast. The silhouettes will be black with the other colors often as light as yellow. Cameras with High Dynamic Range capabilities will help deal with the range of brightness and colors. Composition can also help control the amount of contrast. If the actual sun is excluded from the photograph, the picture is framed just to the left or right of the sun, the brightest spot is excluded, lowering the range of light in the photograph.
Exposure
The automatic exposure control of most modern cameras will produce a good sunset with a silhouetted foreground. Try experimenting by adjusting the exposure. Adding a stop of exposure, either manually or by the exposure compensation control on most modern cameras, will add a bit of detail to the silhouettes. Going down one stop will darken the sunset which may overwhelm the silhouettes if overdone.
What lens is best for sunsets?
The goal requires as much sky as possible, her preference could be her widest zoom, 16-35 mm, or 24-70 mm. The versatile 24-120 mm is a sunset and sunrise go-to lens.
Do I need a filter for sunset photography?
Using a graduated neutral density filter to darken the sky and give the camera enough light to reveal the landscape. Sky’s darkening also adds color to the scene.
Invest in a Reverse Grad Filter
If you’ve never used a sunrise or sunset photography reverse graduated neutral density filter, you’re missing out. That’s because these filters help handle the greatest picture challenge at this time of day-the wide dynamic range.
Naturally, at sunset, the sky region just above the horizon will be white. Meanwhile, the foreground will be dark and the background between the two. In certain situations, this dynamic range is too much for your camera to manage, so you end up with a well-exposed image in one region and not well-exposed in the other.
However, reverse ND grade solves this problem.
That’s because in the centre, reverse ND grades are darkest to match the very bright sky just above the horizon, darkening them and bringing the dynamic range to manageable levels. Then, moving upward, the filtering power gradually decreases, thus managing the brightness of the rest of the sky.
The filter’s bottom part has little to no filtering capacity, so the dark foreground is no darker. Using a filter like this is unmistakable-you get a well-exposed image right then and there, with no need to mix exposures in post-processing.
Reverse ND grades come in different sizes and strengths, and typically provide filtering capacity from 1-stop to 3-stops.
They are also hard edge filters, meaning the transition from filtered to unfiltered areas is very abrupt. This type of filter is ideal for situations where there is a definite horizon, like the picture taken above, looking out to the ocean.
White Balance
Another area to experiment with is white balance. Automated white balance settings may be a little cool as the camera tries to compensate for the warm colors it sees in the picture. Manually setting it to daylight will retain the warm colors of the sunset. For photographers shooting in a raw mode they can make these adjustments in post-production.
Be Patient
It’s not a camera environment, but just as significant. After the sun goes down below the horizon, don’t leave. See the sky light and colors and keep firing. The best color often happens after the sun has set. Especially if there are some clouds in the sky near the horizon. I learned my lesson from giving up on stage too soon to see an explosion of colors after the camera is packed away and I’m going home. I normally hang around until all color is gone and the sky turns black.
Post-Production
All photography software offer a variety of adjustments for brightness, color temperature and contrast. There are also color filters that can be utilized to add even more color to the picture. Still, for the best results, start with a good capture in the field.
