Some photographers will advise you to purchase one. Others will demonstrate how you can survive without it. We respect what every photographer or any other professional feels about camera bags. However, we also have a right to share why we feel you need a camera bag. Here are some reasons why you need one.
But first,
What is a camera bag?
Camera bags come in many carry styles, including backpacks, shoulder bags, sling bags, holster bags, rolling cases, etc. The style most people think of when they hear “camera bag” is the traditional camera shoulder bag, also known as a messenger bag. These camera bags feature top-loading openings for easy access to their camera and gear and are generally carried over the shoulder or hand strap.

They are simply more practical
This is obvious. Camera bags are designed for your camera and other gear. They make it easier to pack and find the equipment you need by just unzipping – thanks to tons of compartments and cubbies for everything you need. That is not something other bags can guarantee.
Besides, some have large zippered openings that actually let you see inside the bag. The Heralder 33 is a good example.
There are tons of options
Unless you want to limit your search to specific camera bags, there are many of them in the market to consider. Some come with more features than others and depending on the kind of bag you need; you should be able to get the right one. We recommend you consider all the practical features you want before dropping some pennies for one.
Ergonomically designed
I tried carrying my gear in a non-camera bag, and honestly, I had to suspend my shoots for a day to get a camera bag despite running on a tight budget. You don’t have to go through the same experience if you get a bag that is designed with photographers in mind. Such a bag has highly padded shoulders, is highly customizable, can accommodate different gear, and distribute the load evenly. I can assure you bags such as the Vanguard Alta Sky 66 will not let you down. Give it a shot!
Safety is key
The safety of your camera bag goes beyond the compartmentalized padded inserts. While they make sure your gear doesn’t bang around against each other, this is not the only safety feature to look for. Also, check for the following safety features:
- Heavy-duty zippers that allow you the easiest access to your gear when you need to take a shot.
- An integrated rain-fly to protect your gear.
- Don’t resemble like camera bags. This reduces the risk of would-be-thieves targeting you for your gear.
Why are camera bags so expensive?
There are many reasons why some camera bags are pricier than others. The material used, padding level, waterproofing ability and safety features are some of the primary reasons that designers use to price their products. Basically, many things are used by designers to determine the price tag of each bag.
